Why Should You Have Health Insurance?
BimaParichay Awareness Team · 14 July 2026 · 5 min read
Health insurance is not about expecting the worst. It is about making sure a hospital bill does not decide your family's financial future.
What health insurance actually does
A health insurance policy is a contract with an insurance company. In return for a premium, the insurer agrees to pay for certain medical expenses, in the manner and up to the limits described in the policy document.
It does not cover everything. Every policy has a sum insured, a list of exclusions, waiting periods and conditions. Understanding those details before you need them is the difference between a smooth claim and an unpleasant surprise.
Savings and insurance do different jobs
Savings are flexible — you decide how to use them. Insurance is specific — it responds to a defined event, under defined terms.
The practical difference is scale. Savings built over years can be consumed by a single extended hospitalisation, while insurance is designed to absorb that kind of concentrated expense so your savings continue doing their original job: education, retirement, a home, or day-to-day security.
Common reasons families review their cover
- Medical costs, especially in private hospitals in metros, tend to rise over time.
- A policy bought several years ago may have a sum insured that no longer matches current treatment costs.
- Family situations change — marriage, children, ageing parents.
- Employer cover may end when the job ends.
What to do next
If you already own a policy, read the schedule and the policy wording once, calmly, before renewal. Look at sum insured, room rent conditions, co-payment, waiting periods and exclusions.
If any of it is unclear, that is normal — policy language is technical. Getting someone to walk you through your own document is usually more useful than reading generic advice.
